Former governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi, calls on people to respect the way his family chose to bury his elder sister. He says it had always been his belief that money should be spent on the living and those in need of help rather than on those that were already dead - Despite court order, Imo APC congress held at secret venue Former governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi, has lamented that people of the southeast spend unnecessary money in burials and other celebrations. He said the money that Igbos usually spend in a week on burials and on other social events can rehabilitate over hundred schools and at least can be used to build a factory. Vanguard reports that Obi made the statement on Friday, May 18, after a requiem mass for his late elder sister at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Ukana, Enugu state.
Reacting to criticisms that he failed to bury his sister like people of his status would ordinarily do, Obi called on people to respect what the family has chosen to do. He said it had always been his belief that money should be spent on the living and those in need of help rather than on those that were already dead. Obi said: “Sometimes I shudder on what people do for the dead as if they are marketing commodity. All the dead needs from the living is decent burial after they must have taken care of him while living. As I Catholic What I owe her now are prayers and booking of masses for happy repose of her soul and not an opportunity to display wealth that should rather be used to add value to humanity.”
The former governor explained that he personally shunned adverts and other gifts from people in support of the burial of his sister. He said he rather asked anybody that wanted to buy anything for him should give him the cash which would be used to rehabilitate a school as well as build a brand new health centre in honour of his sister.
Meanwhile, despite court order stopping the congress of the APC in Imo state, a faction of the party in Imo state has gone ahead to conduct the state congress on Saturday, May 19. The operatives of the state police command numbering over 200 with about 20 operational vehicles barricaded the state secretariat of the All Progressives Congress as there was tension in Owerri, the Imo state capital on Saturday.
